MUCC Members approved a policy resolution made in 2010 requesting the MUCC urge the Natural Resources Commission to change the law regulating the “Shotgun Zone” to allow use of rifles using straight-walled pistol cartridges during firearm deer season. HB 4283 sponsored by Rep. Matt Lori (R-Constantine) passed the House and passed out of the Senate committee back in November 2013, but has not been taken up on the Senate floor.
Additionally, air gun enthusiasts worked to pass a resolution at MUCC’s 2013 Annual Convention to support the use of larger bore air rifles for deer hunting in the shotgun zone.
On June 12, 2014 the NRC approved this change in hunting regulations!
Now called the “Limited Firearm Deer Zone” the added firearms for deer hunting include:
- A .35 caliber or larger rifle loaded with straight-walled cartridges with a minimum case length of 1.16 inches and a maximum case length of 1.80 inches
- A .35 caliber or larger air rifle charged only from an external high-compression power source such as an external hand pump, air tank or air compressor.
Congratulations to Robert Taylor of COSC, Don Benjamin and Dennis Sitzer of ICHF club for bringing this to MUCC’s attention and seeing it through the long haul towards implementation.
